Another full day of surprises and challenges or rather surprising challenges. Before leaving the project at Malacatan on Saturday, I was asked to translate a conversation between the American volunteers, Janet and Dennis, the board members of the Guatemalan association which will actually run and own the project and the project manager from the NGO that is buying the land and constructing the buildings. A little complicated.

It seems, through lack of communication or something that the property just became smaller. No legal description was included in the offer to purchase, only the total amount of land, so now the volunteers found out that the one boundary is somewhere between 6 and 30 feet closer from where they were originally shown it was. Opps. The conversation went relatively well and three of the Guatemalan Board, and Dennis set off to actually measure the boundary to find out if it is 6 or perhaps 30 feet in from hedge that borders the property. This type of omission of accurate information does occur here and I do hope they are able to resolve their differing positions.

Fortunately Corrina, Jaz and I had a deadline to hit the road for our trip back to Antigua and we said our goodbyes and headed east rising out of the subtropical heat. The road was busy with many trucks, some double trailers carrying incredibly big loads of sugar cane to the processing plant. I think their top speed downhill is only 60 km (35mph) and uphill, well, I could walk faster.

I like driving in Guatemala. There are none of the frivolous and fancy things like speed limits, or actually any highway regulations to stop one from driving like it is a video game. The only difference from a video game is that here on the highway there is no rest button and you die. Wrecks are common and deadly. Lots of obstacles like animals, boulders in the road, landslides, many times cars in the oncoming lane passing on blind curves and suddenly they are in your lane. Wow, this is almost fun.

Then there are the chicken buses -turbo charged diesel converted school buses driven by men with an overt death wish or drivers that believe they are invincible because they have a Jesus decal on their windshield. Whichever the case, I give them lots of room and expect crazy stuff from them. Riding in a chicken bus is like a life and death Disney ride on steroids - going around curves so fast the wheels on one side might as well be off the ground. I included a few road trip pictures to entice you to call your AAA or CAA road club for maps, so you too can make the trip.

We did arrive in Antigua five hours later, my hands still clenched in the shape of the steering wheel. I quickly found my hotel for the night, dropped off my stuff off and headed out to do some errands. I had brought a pair of freshly polished shoes from Canada, so what else would I do but look for Domingo, our shoe shine friend to polish them again. That is a picture of him, his brother and sister. I then went to our favorite silversmith to do some covert shopping, (don’t read this Heather), stopped by to say hello to Heather/Alicia’s mandolin teacher and Dora, the weaver who makes our Somos bracelets.

After that flurry of activity, and sending some emails, I had a quick snack (cheese pupusas) from a street vendor at the Merced Church and I am now in my hotel waiting for Corrina to call signaling she has arrived in town, so we can go to dinner. After that who knows, perhaps a midnight drive in the moonlight. But driving at night here is another story.

Richard Shorty, Northern Tutchone "Hummingbird"

Richard is a self-taught artist and his crest is Crow. He began painting in 1981 with encouragement from artist, Ben Houstie. In 1981/82, he started learning Northwest Coast design from books “Looking at Northwest Coast Art” and others. From what he learned, he began to develop his own designs. In 1983, Richard moved to Victoria, BC to learn from other artists. During this time, Richard picked up on his carving techniques and began to create a style that was a combination of traditional and realistic Native art. Richard's first limited edition print "Frog" was produced by the Leona Lattimer Gallery. His work also includes original drawings and paintings. Recently, Richard has painted bentwood boxes for us here at Lattimer Gallery, as well as stunning leather cuff bracelets.

Josiah Cazares is a 26 year old artist from Indianapolis, Indiana. He became interested in Project Somos during his five month travel through Central America where he met Heather and Greg. He heard about the silent auction, and wanted to donate a water color painting depicting the country side of Guatemala. This painting involves one of the most prevalent aspects of daily life in Guatemala: The Chicken Bus. This photo appears a bit blurry because of poor scanner quality.

Claymation Session

This item was a huge hit last year at the Benefit Fiesta. After doing several claymation sessions with different kids in her life, Heather Knox (Executive Director of Project Somos) was encouraged to offer this special session. This is an opportunity for a child in your life to create their own movie which will then be posted on YouTube where they can share it with their friends and family! Your child will work with Heather for about 3-4 hours and they'll create a claymation project together. It's really easy, lots of fun and oh-so rewarding. Dearest Friends,
Heather and I are overwhelmed by all of the good will and energetic support that was received to make the Project Somos Benefit Fiesta a wonderful evening and a success. It was moving to see so many friends and family there and encouraging to see many new shining faces.

My only regret is not having ample time to speak at length to each participant and listen to their insights and hopes around the Children's Village. I look forward to an opportunity in a less structured and busy setting to share some time together. Please feel free to contact us to get together for a coffee and a conversation at any time, it would be our pleasure.

Below is an attempt at a thank you list. Please forgive any ommisions, as it is inevitable that I forgot someone. My apologies in advance. This event was created and orchestrated by many people working as a team, without whom, it would not have happened.

From Rod: I have been a Native Artist for the past 18 years or so. From the cultural group Kwakiutl, Family ties in both Rivers Inlet and Campbell River. I was born and raised in Vancouver and currently reside in Qualicum Beach BC. Married to my beautiful wife Janice in 2002. Brother to Steve Smith and son to the late Harris Smith, who is still my main influence artistically. My work is very comtemporary and I prefer to create abstract artwork, using traditional design, but put together in a very non-traditonal way. The piece that I created for the auction is an abstract forum carving that has been washed with jade coloured paint as its base coat then designed and painted in my abstract style. It is mounted on a piece of alder that has been painted black. I love to work with wood,it is my medium of choice. Lately I have been trying to create non traditional sculpture, but still having the feel of Northwest Coast Native Art.

Music of the Spheres

A collograph, one of several kinds of handpulled prints. Using the term "handpulled" to distinguish original prints from commercially printed "prints". In other words, the artist has actually created the piece.

From Donna: I am a visual artist working with paint, handpulled prints, handmade paper and books, nature boxes, and collage. My work explores my close affinity with the natural environment and my relationships in my own and other cultures. International travel to learn about other cultures and to see the major art galleries and museums of the world has been a passion of mine. Also, after retiring from teaching, I attended Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, graduating with a degree in Visual Arts in 2002.

The images and symbols that I interweave or juxtapose in my pieces, reflect my fascination with the mysteries that I encounter: the dualities which illuminate the paradoxical nature of things. They reflect the past and present, the mythical and the natural, the profound and the mundane. The portal, threshold, or entrance -- ubuquitous symbol for transformation, that bridge between inner and outer space -- is apparent in some of my work, reflecting the inevitability of change; the opportunity to confront and/or embrace the possibilities for growth.

In the past, my concern was primarily with representational imagery, but I have moved into abstraction as it seems to reflect more adequately my own deeply personal and emotional responses to my experiences; to evoke the sense of wonder I often feel when I am in nature. Thus, my work is a synthesis of memory, experiences and insight, and in this way it is evocative rather than descriptive.

As you know (previous blog entry), I am a huge fan of Christina Platt’s Bamboletta dolls. Christina used to live just half a block up from us here in Vancouver but now lives on Vancouver Island with her husband, John and their two adorable boys. Christina is one of those people, one can instantly connect with. She’s friendly, easy going and so loving. She has generously donated a doll for the upcoming gala event and it arrived in the mail just the other day. Christina’s dolls are made using all natural wool and cotton but the most amazing ingredient that goes into each of her dolls is love. Christina pours her heart into each doll and you can tell when you hold one of them in your arms.

I am sure Lucita is going to be a popular item

Erin Green is a Vancouver born artist who has a passion for design and illustration. After spending two years of technical training in the fine arts department at Langara Collage, Erin went on to study communication design at Emily Carr. Savory, broad, and expansive with sensational purity, intensity, and length, this beauty possesses so much fruit and glycerin that it nearly hides the substantial tannins. Although performing exceptionally well at present, I suspect it will close down once it is put in a cold cellar. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2030. Suggested Retail: $250.00

Organic Fair Trade Chocolate

You will see that on the Benefit Fiesta poster it says “wine, desserts and chocolates”. Chocolates. Although I am not someone who has a fully developed appreciation of chocolates yet, there are many people in my life who do. And it’s a deep, burning love and appreciation of the stuff. Obsession? I didn’t say that. One might wonder though... Anyway, we decided that we wanted to have a bit of a chocolate theme at the Benefit for others that appreciate chocolate. Fair trade, organic chocolate.

While at Ethical Bean’s Millionth Pound Celebration, we met Tia from La Siembra (Camino Chocolate) who then introduced us to Kristin Shorey who is a local chocolatier. Oh yes, a chocolatier! A professionally trained individual who does magic with chocolate! Kristin is fairly new to Vancouver and she is just about to start her own company here, so this is like her Vancouver “debut”.

Kristin and I arranged to meet at “Bean Around the World” on Main Street a couple of weeks ago. I instantly loved Kristin. She’s got such a great sense of humour and a real warmth to her. We chatted and talked about chocolate possibilities... Last week I got an email from Kristin saying she was ready for us. On Wednesday, Greg and I visited her and were thrilled to see what she has been up to! Kristin had busily been preparing the most amazing chocolates for the Fiesta. And we got to taste them all! There will be boxes of chocolate up for auction as well as some sweet treats for sale. Perfect Holiday treats!

I am a fourth generation Oregon. I fell in love with chocolate and confections when I was a child...it was how my Czech grandmother and i would spend time together. We pulled taffy, made caramels and hard sugar candy and she taught me how to work with chocolate. It has been a part of my life ever since. After years of working in the conservation movement to make the world a better place I decided to follow my love of all things sweet and I apprenticed in a chocolate factory on Portland, Oregon. The hours flew by, I knew I had found my passion. I Went to the Culinary Institute of America to give myself a strong, diverse background in Pastry Arts.

Klaymation for Kids

I was encouraged to offer this as it has been such a hit with the kids in my life. This is an opportunity for a child in your life to create their own movie which will then be posted on YouTube for them to share with friends and family! Your child will work with me for about 3-4 hours and we'll create a claymation project together. It's really easy, lots of fun and oh-so rewarding. I would recommend this for ages six and up. Inspired Cards

Karen lives in the seaside community of Boundary Bay in BC, Canada. Dubadees

At age 2 Ben started drawing Mr. Potato Heads – which he pronounced as “Dubadee”. For some time, all Ben would draw was Dubadees – sheets upon sheets of them! – all adorable!

Fast forward nine years: On a recent family trip we were reminiscing and somehow got onto the subject of the Dubadees. I suggested to Ben that they would make a fun card line and be an exciting venture for him to be involved with…. Voila! – the Dubadee card line was born!

So, this new collection is a collaboration between me, my 11 year old son, and a 2 year old’s obsession with Mr. Potato Head drawings – Dubadees!

"West Coast Dressy"

Amigos, it's party time.

As you may have heard, Project Somos is putting on its first fundraiser on Wednesday, November 19th. The Benefit Fiesta will be a chance for friends and supporters of Somos to come together, share some wine, sweets & music, bid on some excellent items up for auction, and pledge their financial support to the project.

An excuse to get together with great people and take in chocolate, wine & tunes, you say?? I'm in!

So, now that sweets have been ordered and the wine is on its way, it’s time we address another clearly crucial element of the Fiesta—the dress code.

Perhaps you’ve noticed on your ticket that the dress code for the evening has been set somewhat elusively as “West Coast Dressy.” For those of us who may be a bit confused by this term, lets take a moment to explore ourselves, shall we?

Since my move to the West Coast two and a half years ago, I’ve had to re-evaluate my conception of the word ‘dressy’. Vancouver is the first city I’ve lived in that allows, among other things, yoga wear and micro fleece into the category.

And rubber boots. They’ve somehow made the cut as well. My mom worked with a Vancouverite professor at the University of Saskatchewan who proudly wore her Wellies to work under dress pants and skirts. Being from a particularly dry part of the country, we found this to be a rather strange choice of attire for an otherwise very elegantly-clad woman. For us, rubber boots were something worn only by gardeners and splash-happy children after the occasional rainy day. Surely just a quirky lady, we thought.

But no—it’s West Coast, maaan. Those boots are a venerable fashion accessory here.

Other noticeable flavours include a tendency toward anything made of soy, hemp, or linen, and a relatively high prevalence of ‘vintage’ garments.

Further, as a proud resident of East Vancouver, I have observed a refreshingly large number of gender-bending outfits in and around the neighborhood: women in poor-boy hats, slacks & suspenders, men in tutus & eyeliner...

And I love this. I love that comfort and creativity take priority over some arbitrary rules of fashion set in some other time and place by someone who surely didn’t understand how good Lululemon pants feel to dance in at your cousin’s wedding, or how handy it is for a guy to be able to go from the crag to the club by simply slipping a fluffy red tutu over his wind-resistant, stretch-woven MEC climbing pants.. The wrinkles enhance the look of the hemp-soy trousers, dontcha know. I personally like a guy with a little eye-liner on, anyway.

In short, you lovely Coastal folks have repatriated the rules of fashion into a version that just...fits ya’ a little better. This is a wonderful thing.

So, instead of deeming it a formal or semi-formal evening, we thought we would embrace this under-celebrated cultural constituent by inviting you to turn up the West Coast dial a bit when you’re getting dressed for the Fiesta.

So sisters, don your tutus, and gents, your suspenders—or vice versa. GORE-TEX tuxedos and organic soy-cotton gowns are most welcome, as are ultra-breathable thermal wicking quick-drying all-terrain tanks, or anything you find in your grandpa’s trunk. Fresh, inventive, and comfy are all adjectives I encourage you to keep in mind when getting dressed for the night of the 19th.

Basically, be creative, be comfortable, wear whatever makes YOU feel dressed up, and you’ll fit right in.

Craft Caravan

Here’s an exciting donation that will keep on giving for three months! Craft Caravan is a children’s craft subscription started and managed by Keri Zingle here in Vancouver. Keri is a neighbour of ours and recently started this business so that she can be at home with her two wonderful kids; Tate and Oscar. It’s an idea which I think is absolutely brilliant. How many of us have wanted to be more “crafty” with our kids but just don’t have the inspiration or the supplies to sit down and do something creative?

With a Craft Caravan subscription, children excitedly anticipate the arrival of their own monthly package in the mail. The package comes with everything needed to prepare that month’s creation and only needs a little guidance from the parent. Each month they get to look forward to a different project.

Sweet, sexy socks. What more could a girl ask for?

I was introduced to Heather McDermott by my soon to be cousin-in-law, Sylvia. Heather is the owner of “Soxy”-the first Canadian retailer to sell the Soxy knee length socks. The socks come in 70 different patterns. They are a completely unique sock

originally designed for equestrian riders. I got my first pair the other night and absolutely love them. They're funky, pretty and very comfortable. Here’s a picture of me wearing my “Je t’aime” Soxys. Sweet, eh? Heather and her husband are both avid travellers and they both have a desire and commitment to make the world a better place. She has enthusiastically jumped right in as a Project Somos supporter.
